(1) Placed under the authority of a Director, the Directorate of Veterinary Services is responsible for:

  • the development, monitoring, implementation and evaluation of government policy, strategy and programmes in the field of health protection and veterinary public health;
  • participation in the development of programmes in the field of health protection and veterinary public health;
  • the implementation of programmes and projects in the field of health protection and veterinary public health;
  • the development and monitoring of the application of regulations in this area
  • health protection and veterinary health inspection;
  • the organisation and monitoring of veterinary health protection;
  • the veterinary health police;
  • validation and implementation of animal disease contingency plans;
  • veterinary health inspection of foodstuffs of animal and fishery origin and the fight against zoonoses;
  • monitoring and controlling the movement of animals and products of animal and fishery origin;
  • the examination of applications for authorisation to create and authorisation to open operating establishments in the fields of livestock, fisheries and animal industries;
  • the examination of technical advice files on the import or export of foodstuffs of animal and fishery origin, in conjunction with the administrations concerned;
  • the examination of applications for marketing authorisation for veterinary medicinal products, in conjunction with the administrations concerned;
  • the supply of veterinary equipment and medicines to the decentralised services;
  • monitoring the activities of veterinary pharmacies, laboratories and the marketing of veterinary inputs;
  • monitoring and controlling the activities of veterinarians in private practice;
  • relations with international organisations in the field of animal health and veterinary public health;
  • the follow-up of cross-border veterinary or animal health issues;
  • issues related to the economics of animal health;
  • the popularization of scientific and technical documentation on veterinary health and public health;
  • determining and monitoring the application of standards in terms of health protection, public health and veterinary inputs;
  • the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the veterinary health mandate.
