(1) Under the authority of a Director, the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Fish Industries is responsible for:

  • the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of government policy on fisheries, aquaculture and fisheries industries;
  • the management and sustainable development of fishery resources;
  • the improvement of quantity and quality of production and yields in the fisheries sector;
  • the development and monitoring of projects in the fields of fisheries, aquaculture and the fisheries industries;
  • the implementation and monitoring of projects in the fields of fisheries, aquaculture and fisheries industries; the promotion and development of fish and fish products; the popularization of fisheries and aquaculture techniques;
  • monitoring and control of private fisheries and aquaculture extension services;
  • the protection of sea, river and lake fishery resources;
  • training of fishermen, aquaculturists and processors of fishery products;
  • the examination of applications for approval of the profession of exploiter of fishery and fish resources and products;
  • the examination of licences, permits and authorizations for the exploitation of fishery and fish resources and shellfish;
  • participation in the collection of statistics on fishery and aquaculture products;
  • the examination of applications for approval and authorisation for the creation and opening of fishing and aquaculture operating establishments, in conjunction with the administrations concerned;
  • the examination of technical advice files on the import and export of products of fishery origin;
  • the development and monitoring of the application of regulations in the field of fisheries, aquaculture and the fishing industries;
  • studies and research with a view to increasing the production of fishery and fish resources, in conjunction with the Ministry of Scientific Research and Technological Innovation;
  • the improvement of fishing techniques and the technical itinerary for fish farming;
  • monitoring and control of catching gear and fishing units;
    – the monitoring and control of the movement and marketing of fish and fish products;
  • monitoring the activities of professional and inter-professional organizations of fishermen and fish farmers;
  • support and advice to fishermen, fish farmers and operators of fish and fish products;
  • the emergence and development of professional and inter-professional organizations in the fisheries and aquaculture subsector;
  • research and monitoring of the implementation of incentives for operators in the fisheries and aquaculture subsector; the promotion of fish and fish products; monitoring the application of standards and labels, in conjunction with the administrations concerned;
  • the promotion of the processing of fish and fish products;
  • the popularization of appropriate techniques in the fisheries products industries;
  • the design and promotion of techniques for the development of aquaculture facilities;
  • monitoring the development, operation and maintenance of aquaculture infrastructure;
  • monitoring the application of regulations on aquaculture infrastructure;
  • the development of the aquaculture map, in conjunction with the administrations concerned;
  • the harmonization of the various interventions in the field of aquaculture infrastructure; monitoring the rational management of aquaculture infrastructure and equipment.
