THE SECOND BATCH OF 165 MONTBELIARDES ARRIVES IN CAMEROON
The Minister for Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr Taïga, received the 2nd batch of pregnant Montbeliarde dairy cows on Wednesday 11 January 2023 in Garoua. The animals landed at Garoua international airport at precisely 10:30 am. This second batch comes three years after the first.
Their arrival will make milk production a reality, in line with the Head of State’s call to modernise the livestock sector. The aim is to provide national breeders with high-performance breeding animals. The pregnant dairy cows are destined for all the dairy farms dedicated to the sector throughout the country.
According to the Minister for Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, the second batch will arrive in Cameroon in the coming days. This will make a total of three hundred and thirty (330) Montbeliarde cows for the second and third contingents. These animals will be distributed to those who have subscribed to the business plan set up by the Livestock Development Project (PRODEL) in the Adamaoua, Far North, West, Centre and South regions. Dr Taïga reiterated that the sector cannot be developed without insemination, because such production cannot be limited to a single species.
The first batch of Montbeliarde cows arrived in Cameroon on 3 October 2020. They were quarantined at the LOUGGERRE breeding station in the MAYO LOUTI department and then distributed to certain farmers in the North and Adamaoua regions. Since their arrival, local milk production has received a major boost.
Montbeliarde cows are renowned for their resistance to adverse weather conditions and their ability to produce good quality milk in large quantities.
