RABIES CONTROL: START OF A COURSE ON RABIES CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE

Twenty-three (23) participants from ten countries gathered at the Centre Pasteur in Yaoundé for the 7th International Course on Rabies.

The course is part of the fight against rabies organised by the Projet de Contrôle et d’Élimination de la Rage au Cameroun (RACE Project). It follows on from the mass vaccination campaign against rabies in the Centre and Far North regions, which are the hardest hit by the disease.

The Minister for Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr TAÏGA, who officially launched the workshop which began on 11 December 2023, revealed that around eighty thousand dogs and cats have been vaccinated so far in 2023. He urged everyone to do their bit to eradicate the disease, which ravages both humans and animals.

The course will include training for health workers and vets on the disease, as well as systematic vaccination against rabies, particularly in remote areas. Other objectives include making rabies vaccines available to the public, improving public awareness of the need to control and eliminate rabies in humans and animals, and improving collaboration between the veterinary services and the public.

The course will end on 21 December 2023.
