MINEPIA distributes 164 dairy cows to producer organisations to boost milk production

164 (one hundred and sixty-four) Montbeliarde dairy cows and their calves were distributed to producer organisations and breeders in the Far North, Adamaoua and Centre regions. The dairy cow distribution ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries in the locality of LOUGGERE, MAYO-LOUTI department, Northern region.

During the ceremony, Dr Taiga revealed that the distribution of dairy cows will boost milk production in the country, which has a deficit of 100 million tonnes per year according to the Institut Nationale de la Statistique (INS). He went on to say that the policy of import substitution and promotion and consumption of Cameroonian products will be enhanced accordingly.

The dairy cows are distributed 5 months after their arrival from France. The animals were deemed fit for distribution to other farms after acclimatising to different conditions.

It should be noted that the government has opted for Montbéliarde heifers because they have the advantage of adapting more easily to harsh climatic conditions. Abundant water and grass guarantee a production of 20 litres of milk per day per cow, while technological advances in milking allow milk production to be intensified.
