2nd PAN-AFRICAN CONFERENCE ON THE CONSERVATION OF DONKEY SPECIES IN ABIDJAN: MINEPIA TAKES PART

The Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr. Taïga, is currently taking part in the 2nd Pan-African Conference on the Conservation of Donkey Species, which is being held from 26 to 27 June 2025 at the Radisson Blu Hotel Conference Centre in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

This important meeting, organized under the theme ” Africa’s Commitment to Policy and Practice for Donkey Preservation: Now and in the Future “, is under the aegis of the Government of Côte d’Ivoire, in collaboration with the AU-IBAR, the International Coalition for Working Equidae (ICWE) as well as several Regional Economic Communities, including ECOWAS, SADC and IGAD.

The conference aims to assess the progress made by African states in the protection of donkeys, to review policies for the sustainable management of this species, and to make concrete recommendations with a view to strengthening the implementation of the African Union’s moratorium on the slaughter of donkeys for their skins.

Among the expected outcomes of this session are :

  1. A better understanding of the policy and legal challenges related to the conservation of donkey species;
  2. Sharing good practices in law enforcement, Developing recommendations for African Union Member States;
  3. The consolidation of the pan-African strategy for the sustainable development of donkeys in Africa.

Cameroon’s participation in this conference illustrates its constant commitment to animal welfare, the preservation of biodiversity, and the sustainable development of livestock systems.
