OEACP-MINEPIA: FISH AND SHRIMP UNDER DISCUSSION
On October 6, 2022, the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries granted an audience to the Under-Secretary General of this institution.
Cameroon must have quality infrastructures for quality products in the fishing industry. This is the summary of the audience granted by the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr Taïga, on October 6, 2022 to ESCIPION Oliveira Gomez, Under-Secretary General of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OEACP), in charge of the Economic, Structural Transformation and Trade Department.
The organization supports Cameroon, through a number of donors, in the fisheries sector, with a view to producing fish and seafood, in particular shrimp.
The FISH4 ACP program is one of the fruits of this FAO-led support. Indeed, this project, whose mission is to enhance the potential of fisheries and aquaculture, aims to increase the competitiveness and environmental sustainability of the shrimp sector as its main product. OEACP’s aim is to ensure that Cameroon has the infrastructure, such as analysis laboratories, to enable this product to enter the European Union market, for example.
Cameroon has a lot to offer when it comes to shrimp. The country is located on the Atlantic coast and has many waterways. It was in 1472 that Portuguese explorers named it “RIO DOS CAMAROES”, for the abundance of crustaceans discovered in the region. As a seafood product, it’s the main export, and we’re going to have to make the most of its potential.
