PROJECT TO SUPPORT TRADITIONAL POULTRY FARMING: ACTIVITIES LAUNCHED

The project to support the improvement of traditional poultry farming in the Far North region is the result of cooperation between the public authorities represented by the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

In handing over the support to the women who will benefit from the project, Dr Taiga spoke of the added value of this project in the region: “The Far North is the cradle of free-range poultry. So this project comes at just the right time to support the women. Poultry farming is essentially done by women, and poultry means chicken, duck and guinea fowl, so the aim is to fight poverty and provide women with additional income. Poultry also plays an additional role in food security. It’s an important component, and the FAO is participating and supporting the government,” he said.

As for the FAO representative, Dr Atman MRAVILI, he took the opportunity to thank the Cameroonian government for the efforts it is making to make cooperation between Cameroon and the FAO sustainable and solid. He stressed that “Our mandate allows and obliges us to analyse the various investment opportunities to ensure that food security is effective. And together with the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, we thought that the poultry farming sector in the Far North was important, as it is a lever for development and for the resilience of the population in this area, and for this reason we held consultations that led to technical cooperation programmes that are now enabling us to launch an initial core project to support the improvement of family poultry farming”.

The donations were handed over by the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries and the FAO representative to the women benefiting from this project to support traditional poultry farming.
