The Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr. Taïga, chaired, on Tuesday, December 16, the first session of the Steering Committee of the Project for the Promotion of Continental Fish Farming (PROFIP).

The Start-up Inland Fish Farming Promotion Project is being implemented with the technical support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will be implemented over a period of five years and will cover four regions of the country including the Central, Littoral, West and South. It provides for the mobilization of seven Japanese experts, covering the main fields of aquaculture, who will work in close collaboration with seven Cameroonian counterparts, in a dynamic of national capacity building and sustainable transfer of skills. The project coordination unit is based in Yaoundé and will be responsible for guiding, guiding, informing and assisting fish producers in the regions concerned.

Launching the work of the first session on December 16, MINEPIA, president of the said steering committee, stressed that the cooperation between Cameroon and Japan is enriched by a new structuring project, intended to promote sustainable and modern continental fish farming in Cameroon.

 “PROFIP brings to Cameroon Japanese expertise in fish farming and aquaculture, with a strong emphasis on the transfer of skills to the benefit of national actors,” said the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries.

The ceremony took place in the presence of the Ambassador of Japan to Cameroon, H.E. Minami Kentaro, the Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as well as several partners of the sub-sector.

Through this initiative, the Government intends to consolidate the development of the fish farming subsector, improve national fisheries production and strengthen food security, while contributing to job creation and improved incomes for actors in the sector.
